Ecuador earthquake of 7.8 magnitude kills dozens

Just one day after Japan suffered a second, and larger earthquake than the one that hit on Thursday, Ecuador has been hit with a very big quake... At least 77 people are dead and 500+ are injured, so far.

How awful, time for a little offering to MSF or other worthy group that may go in to help out. Many people displaced to the streets in Japan and Ecuador. I am sending sympathy waves.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

I suspect that the death toll will rise significantly as the days pass. My hearts go out to the people of Ecuador.

In a strange twist of events, 168 days ago a very good friend of mine left Bahia Caraquez, nearly ground zero for the earthquake, embarking on a single handed, non-stop, around the world sailing adventure that took him around the 5 major capes in the southern ocean. Just yesterday, he crossed his outbound track and turned north heading back to Bahia Caraquez. We get reports from him every 3 days and maintain contact with his wife who, "decided to sit this one out!" With only 3000 miles left to go, his wife was just making arrangements to fly back to Bahia Caraquez in anticipation of his arrival and successful completion of this truly incredible adventure. She contacted friends there who have told here not to come. They say the devastation is unbelievable and it would be a mistake to return. Our friend still has 8-10 days before making landfall, but I doubt things will be much better by then. He is now contemplating diverting course and heading to Peru. In an even more ironic event, he celebrated his 70th birthday today, April 17th.

When someone asks him what he did for his 70th birthday, I hope they have plenty of time to listen to his response.

Our thoughts are with the people of Ecuador tonight.

When the crust and plate on one side of the globe is shifted in an earthquake, it generates pressure waves that go through the earth's core. When enough collect, they cause a shift on the opposite side of the globe.

So a large quake in Japan may, not will, but may result in a quake on the opposite side a few days later.

Yes, looking at the RSOE EDIS site shows the ring of fire is in an uproar! quakes of various levels are all over, volcanic eruptions in Indonesia/Philippines/Japan causing quakes, then NZ is shaking, California, Ecuador, and even Alaska are feeling it, pressure venting and shifting. Very active as it is set off.

So the rotation of the earth has actually been changed, and the weight coming off the melting areas seems like a possibility for affecting the plates they were weighing down. Sorry, I don't remember where I saw the pole shift information, but it was that the North Pole had stopped moving toward Hudson Bay & is now heading east.

I read about the poles shifting, too. This is another dangerous byproduct of fracking: earthquakes. I'm sure tsunami warnings are up. Scary stuff!! Rec'd!

The swarm of earth quakes in a southern island of Japan slipped 38 inches to the south west and rose 9 inches along the fault at certain points. After the 7.4 quake the quakes then moved northward along the fault. It is not done I am sure. There will be more in Japan north of the island and possible more to the south of the island. That much slippage puts pressure on other parts of the fault.
