Europe turning away from U.S.

What happens to the "indispensable nation" when the rest of the world tells it that it is very dispensable? We have reached that moment.

French President Emmanuel Macron is calling on the European Union to boost military cooperation and stop relying on the United States for defense while reaching out to Russia to develop a "strategic partnership."

In an address to French ambassadors on August 27, Macron appeared to leave behind his efforts in the last year to develop joint policies with U.S. President Donald Trump and instead criticized Trump for being an "unreliable" partner and "turning his back" on the "multilaterism" built by Western powers since World War II with such actions as pulling out of the global climate change agreement and Iran's nuclear deal.

The 40-year-old French president said he would put forward new proposals in the coming months for the EU to boost defense cooperation, as well as talks with Russia on their security relationship.

"Europe can no longer rely on the United States for its security. It is up to us to guarantee European security, and therefore European sovereignty," Macron told an audience of some 250 diplomats, lawmakers, and international relations experts.

Remember that Macron was the guy that Trump actually liked.
Italy has also called for opening relations with Russia, but this is about more than just Russia. We are talking about the entire security/military alliance situation in Europe.
But Macron is only one guy. What does Germany say?

Germany and France said they’re working on financing solutions to sidestep U.S. sanctions against countries such as Iran, including a possible role for central banks.

The discussions, which also involve the U.K., are a signal that European powers are trying to get serious about demonstrating a greater level of independence from the U.S. as President Donald Trump pursues his “America First” agenda.

“With Germany, we are determined to work on an independent European or Franco-German financing tool which would allow us to avoid being the collateral victims of U.S. extra-territorial sanctions,” French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said Monday during a meeting with press association AJEF. “I want Europe to be a sovereign continent not a vassal, and that means having totally independent financing instruments that do not today exist.”

This alternative SWIFT system is exactly what the BRICS have been discussing, and slowly implementing for years.
However, the fact that the BRICS are taking this long to get an alternative system in place should tell you that the EU is still many years away from getting out from underneath the thumb of Pentagon/Wall Street. But the fact that this is now in the open means that this will eventually become a reality.

And the US should go back to imposing war taxes on its citizens.

@HenryAWallace that tax should be paid by any Corporation making a profit off of the wars, and a very high one at that.

Looks like there is a split happening between two camps. One centered around France/Germany, and the other around the UK and E. European countries. One resents the US and the other doesn't. Aside from that, the Europeans will dance to the US tune for a long time to come.

@MrWebster
Their opinion doesn't mater.
Germany/France/Italy dominates the rest of Europe.
They will dictate to the EU.

that if we now find ourselves "alone in the world" we at least have a LOT of company with our military hardware, weaponry.

countries for far too long. We got cocky. Plus the only kind of ‘diplomacy’ we’ve ever practiced is the ‘my way or you’ll be sorry’ gunboat type.

The one thing I like about this is there may never again be another ‘Coalition of the Willing’.

The Bush administration briefly used "coalition of the willing" to refer to the countries who supported, militarily or politically, the 2003 invasion of Iraq and subsequent military presence in post-invasion Iraq.

willing, you have to ask the person first and then wait for the answer. Bush never asked, it was assumed we were willing. Unfortunately nobody said 'no' either.
