I just unfollowed a person I genuinely like, on Facebook. She posts many political shares. Today's last straw was some Voidist essay about how millennials need to get on board with HRC because they just don't understand how villainized she has been for decades and she's still standing.
People who politicize their social media just need to realize, IMHO, that they are driving away old friends if those friends don't share their political views. When I am wearing out my 'Hide post' finger, the 'sharer' gets gone.

I use Facebook mostly for politics and most of my friends there
share my political views, but when they don't I engage with them in the comments, trying to keep it respectful. There's one guy I haven't heard from in a while. I think he probably unfriended me. That's fine. Respectful is one thing, but I will have my say and will not back down. Some Hill supporters are still friends. They appreciate the debate.

It's been quite the season
for Office Bitching About Politics.
In my office, virtually all of the GOP contingent hates Hillary and likes Trump well enough because he was the actual best of the lot--but let me tell you, they are still arguing about whether or not A Wall on the Border will work or not. Meanwhile, all the lefties are for Sanders except for one guy, who is kind of wishy-washy and will vote D no matter what because it's better than the R.
But what really blows my mind and makes my head do a Regan MacNeil on my neck is the part where all the Ds and Rs agree about Hillary, even the wishy-washy one. They agree she's unfit, and they agree that if they had to vote D, they'd vote Sanders before they'd vote for her. It's just surreal this year...
Most of the older co-workers (40 yrs)
don't bother to vote, don't do politics - or feel it's too corrupt.
The younger ones are all Bernie and KNOW the system is corrupt. But we don't talk politics or religion at all in my new job. But I do know me and my boss who is very young.. we are on the same liberal page. My last boss was a right winger rapturist.... ugh

I got my rec-ability back OT, this morning.
And the biting flies who slander, buzz in repeatedly remind me of now, outside my front doors. It's black fly season. Much worse than mosquitoes (not so sure now with Dengue, malaria and Zika) they bite and the immune response is worse and there are swollen spots that last for weeks. Plus they attack eyes and respiratory routes.
An entire diary about the legal definition of slander. The train is now off the tracks on its side, wheels still moving.

So here you got these giant tar sands mining operations up there in Alberta. Why else would they put a town of 80,000 + people in a spot 270 miles NNE of Edmonton?

So they're having a few ordinary days up there, you know, destroying the Canadian forests and supporting ecosystems while extracting oil from the ground, doing their part to contribute to the 3 ppm/year industrial capitalism adds to the carbon dioxide endowment of Earth's atmosphere. Along comes bone-dry, super-hot weather -- courtesy of climate change -- and a forest fire! The fire burns down more than three-quarters of Fort McMurray.

Although it started as a Hudson Bay Company outpost, as you clearly referenced it is a major tar sands processing center. Alberta is the Texas of Canada in more ways than one (oil, conservative loonies and climate change denial). The fact that our two major party potential candidates are still 100% wedded to the idea that fossil fuels are a driver of economic prosperity is not only short sighted, it's amoral at this point in history. You want a real economic driver and good paying jobs? Then start investing heavily (not token money) in alternative energy sources. But Noooooooo. We won't do it because it does not profit the PTB. I'm surprised they allow Tesla to exist.

You don't really "put out" big fires
you build firebreaks and contain it, hope for better weather (such as winds that blow the fire front back into the already burned area where there is no fuel left), and let it burn itself out. Water is generally available near structures, which is what they try and save. Slurry bombers reinforce the fire breaks. Sometimes you can get a helicopter with a bucket to douse a tiny fire that just started and keep it from growing. This mess is far past that point.
It is indeed ironic that the service town for tar sands production got hit. I fear the irony will be lost on the people affected. Their livelihood depends on not believing they are bringing about disaster, so they won't.
Nobody mentions this, but this isn't just a fire. It's an ecosystem change. When that forest grows back it won't be the same forest, it will be one adapted to a hotter, dryer climate. The boreal forest is on its way out.

The insurance companies won't go "belly up"
since all of them have reinsurance (e.g. from Munich Re) but they stand to lose, by the latest estimates, upward of $9 bn CAD.
Expect everyone's rates to rise, however, and since both the Federal and Provincial governments stand to lose billions from loss taxation/royalty revenues from the oil producers (production is down by 1 million bbl / day) expect to see a sharp decline in the economy, fewer services, and higher taxes.

For years, liberals have mocked Republicans for voting against their self-interest. Now we are being told to put our self-interest aside and vote for what's best for Hillary because she's "still standing". I personally don't care if she's standing, sitting, or doing jumping jacks. If she's not fighting on behalf of working class Americans, she's not worth supporting. Sorry, but it's about Team-Me not Team-D. Hillary fill fight tooth and nail for her own interests and those of her corporate sponsors but that's about it.

...is that Prof. Umbridge is on the 'good' side and sees herself as going what is right by being against Voldemort even though her actions are self-serving and evil. The lesson is brought home when Harry complains about Umbridge and Sirius Black tells Harry that not everyone who is bad is on Voldemort's side.
So the Hillary comparison. Technically on the 'good' side while being self-serving and doing evil deeds.
