Canada and the US signed The Migratory Bird Treaty on this day in 1916, with the intention of saving the lives of migratory birds.  It is not nearly as well known as it should, but it does protect such birds  from killing for sport by US citizens to some degree.  Unfortunately, the US permits  the so-called incidental take (killing) by wealthy individuals and corporations in pursuit of increased profits as well as killings by the USDA's "Wildlife Services" which wantonly slaughters vast amounts of wildlife in the hopes of enhancing farm profits.

-

An utterly Un-American farce known as the House Committee on Un-American Activities, created and perpetuated to harass and persecute those suspected of wrong thinking launched hearings on this date in 1966 to attack those who engaged in any way in Anti-Vietnam War behavior.   As might be expected, the hearings were protested and the witnesses were hostile and defiant, and, since the activities they hoped to criminalize weren't, at the time, remotely criminal per se, nothing was accomplished.

A Chemist, a physicist, an engineer and an economist find themselves stranded on a desert island, surrounded by cases of canned goods that had been stored in one of the lifeboats. All agreed that they had food aplenty, but all the same, had no food until they solved the problem of the cans.

The Chemist suggested inverting the cans and submerging then part way into the salt water then turning them over and poking holes in the top with sticks once they were nearly rusted through.

The Others all agreed that this would simply take to damn long and they would starve.

The Physicist suggested placing cans on a flat rock at the base of a tall palm and dropping another large rock on them from the top of the palm, whereupon the resultant hydrostatic pressure would split the seams.

The Others all agreed that this would result in the contents being splattered and scattered all over the surrounding sand and rendered inedible.

The Engineer, in a lengthy spiel with many diagrams drawn in the sand suggested placing cans on a flat rock and pounding on them with another large rock, whereupon the resultant hydrostatic pressure would split the seams.

The Others all agreed that this was simply doing the physicist's idea the hard way and would result in the contents being splattered and scattered all over the surrounding sand and rendered inedible.

The Economist said "I see that you've saved the best for last. Now, assume that we have a can opener ..."

@mimi The article link was to the Times Union a local news paper from Albany NY.
The test figures were from the Albany County Department of Health.
Announced by the Albany County Supervisor.

For EL, The CDC has decided to only report breakthrough cases that land people in the hospital.
That is why you do not see this reporting at a national level.

without fiddling with my ad blocker, but I' keep seeing claims like that that are seriously at odds with what I keep seeing said about breakthroughs on a national level. Makes me wonder not only about the vaccines, but also about the vaccinations and vaccination protocols such as how many were vaccinated with non-functioning vaccines to storage or other issues.

Excellent timing for National Rum Day. The news in general but especially out of Afghanistan is enough to make an old woman want to line the entire bar with shots of 151 and then strike a light. For breakfast even.

Y'all know that Florida Man meme picture with the guy rockin out in the middle of the street during a hurricane while flying the US flag? Yeah, so that was my dad's entire plan for not getting covid, and I'll give you one guess who got covid. We're hearing from family that he's been sick as hell because he's avoiding talking to his adult children, all of whom tried to warn him to take some kind of protective measures while he kept waffling back and forth between believing the virus didn't exist and daring it to come fight him with fists like a Real Man. We all vehemently disagree with his politics but we all love him, too, so of course we're hoping his stubborn ass recovers even though he is virtually guaranteed not to learn a single damn thing from this experience.

Please everyone be careful out there!

I rarely drink rum. I like G & T in the summer and Scotch in the winter, but really prefer beer and wine to spirits.

I like making Apple brandy, distilling home made apple wine. I've got lots of muscadines set which I'm planning on using for wine. Not enough to distill though. It takes about 4 gallons of wine to make a gallon of liquor. Rum of course is a sugar cane based spirit.
https://milehidistilling.com/how-to-make-rum/

Rum is predominately produced with usulphured molasses, a product resulting from refining the sugarcane plant. However, you can use raw cane sugar or sugarcane juice if you don’t happen to have molasses on hand.

As to jokes here's a weak one...
I went down the street to a 24-hour grocery store. When I got there, the guy was locking the front door.

[video:[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB__mz4KGC8]

We had a nice cool fresh morning here due to a rain storm last evening. Austin got hammered, we just got a spit but still, it cooled us off.

I read this this morning. It's about Osterholm's interview yesterday on a talking-head morning show. This was the interesting part in my estimation.

He explained that, unlike with previous variants, many infected people have acquired the Delta variant during outdoor activities. He said, “I would… point out the other thing that helps you understand the infectiousness of this virus is the fact that we’re now seeing more and more events with outdoor air. You know, months ago we were saying if you’re outdoors, you’re pretty safe. We have had a number of events happening where, in fact, people crowded together outdoors get infected.

“Now, if that’s happening outdoors, imagine what happens to our kids when they’re closely together in schools… At this point, we need to put everything we can towards controlling this virus.”

Dr. Osterholm noted that an important issue is the quality of the masks that are being used. In addition to non-compliance with masking, the use of relatively ineffective cloth masks to combat a virus that is spread through the air is extremely problematic. “We’ve not paid any attention really to giving the public the message that you need much more effective masking,” he said, “such as the N95 mask that we talk about or the KN95 for kids.”

Beat Covid-19.
Povidone Iodine is the “ silver bullet” to prevent and control Covid-19.
Dr Ricardo Persaud - FRCS
Time to put a lid on Covid. How? Intranasal and gargled povidone iodine is the game changer. See video and the review paper of scientific evidence published in online Journal of Otolaryngology and Rhinology ( 7th August 2020)
https://irispublishers.com/ojor/pdf/OJOR.MS.ID.000553.pdf

from FLCCC
1. Irrigate your nose with a Betadine wash 3x/day. Betadine wash can be made by taking 1cc of 10% Betadine and diluting with 1cc NaCL (saline solution). This makes a 5% solution which can be added to a nose irrigation bottle like the one in the Neilmed Sinus Rinse™ system. This can be a good prevention strategy for when you suspect that you’ve been exposed to COVID-19.

2. Gargle with, but do not swallow, mouthwashes that contain cetylpyridinium such as Scope™,ACT™, and Crest™. You can also gargle with Listerine™, made from essential oil compounds of eucalyptus, thymol (thyme), and menthol. These essential oil compounds have also been shown to be virucidal. Gargling with a Betadine solution is also an option (see nasal wash solution), or povidone/iodine 1% solution as alternative.

We CAN prevent this virus, but we lack a clear consistent message other than get vaccinated. However, with the spread of Delta by the vaccinated that obviously isn't the sole answer.

Here, yet again, we have the allowance of unneeded deaths and disease to promote big pharma profit.

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

@Lookout . You are right. There may be effective preventative measures that we can all use. If they cause no harm then there is every reason to try them. I've been using a betadine based gargle since summer of '20 ( I think), ever since you and QMS wrote about it. Only problem is that it's more pricey than making your own with the dilution of betadine and saline. Also the gargle I have is 0.5% povidone-iodine solution. Don't know if it's as effective. Will watch above video later. TY.

of Pirate Jenny, in fact, I was positively elated when I stumbled across Nina's version.

When they start providing comfortable well fitting N-95s at a reasonable price ...

Meanwhile, a couple snorts of my povidone-iodine nose spray and one of the many multilayer cloth masks my wife made me will have to do. Of course, the biggie isn't really indoor or outdoor so much as it is CROWDS. It may be airborne, but the source is people (just like soylent green). Eschew crowds and crowded venues and you have a good start on being safe.

The mouthwash is somthing of an issue, not many have thymol (Listerine does) and the others also only have the specified chemical in specific versions.

The official rum of the British Navy is Pussers.

pusser_s-british-navy-rum-15-year-old-nelson-blood_1.jpg

This is Admiral Nelson's blood. Never cared for it much (the regular stuff). Usually have to mix it with something. While in Brazil, the local drink was 'cupa libre' your basic rum and coke with lime (and ice if you were lucky). Never had a good sipping rum until somewhere in the Caribe was given a black rum.

Bacardi-Black-Rum-1.75L__81363.1499181525-2.jpg

You know how sailors get. Follow the rhum line. Funny side story, crews were given their daily ration of rum while serving in Her Majesty's fleet, long ago. Maybe only the officers get it now?

here as to "rhum line", pretty good one actually. Brazilian's speak Portuguese which may account for the transformation of Cuba Libre into cupa libre, or maybe they all hate Cuba and Cubanos. Used to drink those in Baja to celebrate the liberation with a libation.

Ah yes, between 10 & 12, "up spirits" followed by "The Queen, God bless her", leading to the alternate (yachting) tradition that cocktail hour starts as soon as the sun is above the yard-arm. (Which I note derives from Portsmouth Engelonde, and is ergo around sun up locally, but that is a different matter) At any rate the Navy decided that modern vessels had too much stuff, especially that newfangled electronical stuff, that was perhaps too tricky and touchy to be fiddled with after ye olde traditional tot which had by then long been split into 2 totlets, the original and one in the afternoon. So, July 31, 1970 all hands got their last tot, making that date "Black Tot Day". Dunno if black armbands are appropriate for 7/31 or not.

It’s long been obvious to anyone paying attention that the Taliban would regain control of the country when occupying western powers withdrew, but I don’t think anyone would’ve put money on it happening this quickly. A few interesting questions have come up about this, like for example how hilarious would it be if after spending twenty years and trillions of dollars and thousands of human lives “fighting the Taliban”, the Taliban suddenly resumed power as a US puppet regime?

for early sailing vessels ..

Once ‘bleu de Gênes’ was a fabric used for sail making around the ancient harbour of Genoa.

Cotton was TOO EXPENSIVE for sails or work pants then. Until the 1800s cotton was a luxury item in Europe. The original denim was made of HEMP!
Then came blue jeans.

The-origin-of-blue-jeans-2.jpg

A historic galleon 'Neptue' anchored in the harbour of Genoa.
This ‘Neptune’ was not an original Spanish galleon from the mid-17th century, but scenography for Roman Polanski’s film ‘Pirates’ that came out in 1986.

The carrack was designed and she was truly one of the tall ships. It has its origin in Genoa and sports the design of three Mediterranean vessels set to sail north through the Atlantic trade in the Bay of Biscay.
