Ice storm predicted for today. Up to an inch thick. Have studs, will can travel, but will stay off the roads.
Had some brutally cold weather since last Friday. Temperatures dropped to 12° Saturday morning and the daytime temperatures have hovered around 20° ever since. Currently 19° and the freezing rain is due around noon.
I know these are not extreme conditions compared to other parts of the country, but it still sucks.
I hope everybody stays warm and safe.
Earthling2 just returned from a 100th birthday party and feast for her grandma in San Pedro, California. Sunny, warm, SoCal, and a Greek feast. I should have went with her.
She sent me pics of the food, just to taunt me, grrr!
Then she sent me pics of her frolicking in the surf, grrr grrr.
So I ate her stash of candy.
I may have to go to the store.

10 degrees here in sunny Ogden. Sam was barking an alarm bark so I opened the back door and good gravy was it cold! Didn’t see what she was barking at, but she started doing Lassie like things. "No you really need to look at this."

We've accumulated
2-3 inches of snow since Friday and has turned to hardback slick.
Haven't seen any tracks through yard, so racoon family must be holed up somewhere warm.
Have been bringing the hummingbird feeder inside at night to keep from freezing solid.
They are waiting for it every morning when I get up. One actually looks in the bedroom window.
Give Sam a scratch for me and stay warm.

Have a straight flat hoe like blade with a long handle which helps break up the ice
on the steps. Got a couple inches snow overnight, but now it has turned to rain. The

Amazingly universal tool. I also have an underground bar from my days laying pipelines. Weighs about 25 lbs. but breaks even concrete.
Bring a lunch though.

One pipe is frozen, but no damage done.
Tomorrow marks a return to normal winter weather.
Every government office is closed for the day. A 12 car pile up due to an icy bridge resulted in one woman's death. As the crow flies, maybe 3 miles from my home.

Looks like I am going
to make a short drive to the office to check my mail and hunt for a document for my tax prep.
It is pretty sunny now, so I may as well go while I can get across a short bridge along the way.
For whatever reason, we have no homeless people in my small town. Go 18 miles south or 15 miles east, the towns are crawling with homeless folks. Not sure either of those communities have shelters. One is opening up some school campus buildings, calling them "warm shelters".
We are a pathetic nation who deprives poor people of survival necessities in favor of war, and low taxes on the wealthy class.
If you are poor, it is your own fault. If you are rich, you deserve to keep your wealth.

Told the story to my wife who said it is cruel to do that to folks suffering climate woes, though I know she has done it to some of her relatives in the midwest on occasion, like "here we are picnicking just off the PCH in Ventura", etc. I will definitely NOT message you any pics from Mazatlan or the Manzanillo Iguana Sanctuary.
At any rate, the kid will learn to keep their stash well hidden, a skill good for all times and locales.
It is 50 here with rain predicted for today and most of the following 10 days. Not raining yet, so time to get outside and get a few things done.

Town of my birth, second oldest town in California, wonderful San Pedro. Such an enclave of a community due to being a port town. Always the most international town in L.A. Big slavic, greek, and italian populations, with authentic markets and restaurants of all. The Far East from Chinatown had a place on Pacific Ave., authentic Morrocan food on Gaffey, Ramona's Bakery, it was endless. The Donut on Gaffey at 17th, best bear claws in L.A. The parks were great for birding, Pt. Fermin, Averill, Peck, Cabrillo Beach, a very un-LA like town for being in LA. I lived on 10th, 11th, 12th, couple blocks uphill of Gaffey over the years. Awesome old houses.
Here at 100 W x just under 30N it was 15f this morn with a ZERO chill factor. 30N is roughly San Diego, Houston, N'awlins, and Jacksonville, FL. Froze all day yesterday, will today, break out tomorrow noonish. Brutal cold a way down south here.

I never visited San Pedro. It was always to hard to get to. Probably why it was such an enclave. Been to the port a few times, but never old Town.
E2 is very familiar with it as she visited family there often.

Yeah, San Pedro was at a dead end.
Bottom of the then 11, now 110 (Harbor) Freeway. Bottom of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The whole peninsula was inaccessible unless you lived around the base of it. Lots of LA birders hated having to go out there again to chase another rare bird I found, because it was at a dead end. I did it to them as often as I could.

I have long
wanted to attend San Pedro's commemoration celebration on Feb 25 of the Battle of Los Angeles (Great LA Air Raid) of 2-25-42, that weird event where SoCal residents believed they were under attack by enemy forces during the blackout period several months after Pearl Harbor.
1400 rounds of anti-aircraft fire were sent up, with no effect on the "enemy" craft that was seen from Pasadena to Santa Monica then down the coast to Huntington Beach where it disappeared over water. Witnesses said the craft travelled at stationary to fantastically high speeds. Several people on the ground were killed from traffic accidents, ack-ack shells crashing into their homes, or heart attacks. Maybe the first US stateside casualties of WW2, and the only ones except for Japanese balloon bombs sent over to Oregon late in the war.
Official and rather dubious explanations from D.C. were not warmly received by west coast military officials.

1941 with Belushi
the movie 1941 was partly inspired by the 1942 Great Battle of L.A. John Belushi was fantastic in it, had Akyroyd, and a bunch of big stars, was a bit under the radar, but actually very funny. Was a Spielberg movie! would recommend.
The big guns were still there in 60' and 70's, but since removed, as Nike missile stuff locally. I think Redondo Bch. had some of those, where Wilderness Pk. is now. The current celebration is in Angel's Gate park right above Pt. Fermin, which is a world class awesome beautiful top-of-the-cliffs at sea park.. Had many a morning coffee and donut seawatching with telescope there. A mile west of Pt. Fermin is Royal Palms where you can drive down to the tide pools. A great playground.

Yeah, it was good.
Ft. Columbia at the mouth of the Columbia River still has a couple of big guns on display and you can freely walk the underground magazines and resupply tunnels.
Great place for Lazer tag. And you can rent the barracks and officers quarters to spend the night.
